Stage 3 Diet
Duration: 3 weeks
Goals
- 64 ounces of fluid/day (clear liquids + full liquids)
- 60 grams of protein/day (Women)
- 70 grams of protein/day (Men & Women 5’8” or taller)
Guidelines
- Sip and eat slowly, do not gulp. Stop if you feel full or nauseous.
- Initially drink only 4 ounces in one hour, adjust as tolerated.
- Use a food log to keep track of fluid and protein intake.
- If you are having trouble meeting protein goals consider adding whey or soy protein powder to your shakes.
- Watch out for dehydration. If you are experiencing dry mouth, dizziness, nausea or headaches you may be dehydrated. Keep an eye on your urine color, dark urine means you need to drink more.
- Temporary lactose intolerance may occur. Try lactose free or soy milk in place of regular milk or switch to a lactose free shake.
- You may start your vitamins 2 weeks after surgery – Multivitamin with iron, Calcium Citrate and Vitamin B12. If you are feeling nauseous, wait until you start Stage 4 diet.
