Intensive Care

Milford Regional’s expansion of the intensive care unit (ICU) increased the Medical Center’s capacity to care for critically ill patients with several additional beds and ample space to accommodate the needs of staff, patients, family members as well as the most up-to-date technologies.

ICU Rooms

The expansion features larger rooms throughout to handle the very latest technologies, with separately enclosed bathrooms for each and lifts to accommodate heavier patients. A large part of space is reserved in each room for a “family zone” with a couch that converts to a bed, outlets to plug in a phone or computer and a place to hang coats. This ICU changes the way families are involved in care, now recognized by the medical field as a key partner in patient recovery. Special features of the ICU rooms include floor materials that absorb sound, larger windows because of the connection sunshine and nature have with healing, and high-tech glass (used in ICUs in Europe) that grows cloudy at the push of a button — eliminating privacy curtains that can harbor infectious germs. Milford Regional has become the first hospital in Massachusetts with this enhancement, part of an overall effort has created one of the nicest ICUs in the state.

Good news for additional family members… they can gather in two expanded waiting rooms, each of which has furniture suitable for sleeping and movable partitions for private discussions or meetings with doctors, nurses or social workers.

Tranquility Rooftop Garden

Unlike any other hospital in the region, patients, family, visitors and staff will find a welcome respite with the uniquely designed open, rooftop patio and garden area adorned with plants, flowers, benches and tables; another area we can offer families for more privacy to talk or to simply get some fresh air and rejuvenate.

Exceptional Critical Care Staff

Milford Regional is one of the few ICUs in the country with full-time intensivists (physicians who specialize in caring for patients in the ICU) holding board certifications in critical care medicine and another, relevant specialty — in their case, pulmonary disease. Not only do Milford Regional’s hold these certifications, but one of them is always on-hand during the day’s busiest hours — unlike other hospitals, where a physician is summoned but may not be immediately available.

Milford Regional’s intensivists treat ICU patients for serious conditions like heart attacks, strokes, respiratory failure and severe asthma, as well as those with chronic problems recovering from surgery. Learn more about how our intensivists treat critically ill patients.
