I have always been interested in understanding how the brain works from the standpoint of both behavior and also how there are multiple connections between nerves that cause the various body parts to function in concert. The brain is the organ of the mind. After majoring in both biology and psychology in college, I felt the two areas provided a fantastic knowledge base for understanding the medical conditions that are seen in the practice of clinical neurology.
Each patient is a unique individual with a unique set of medical needs or problems. My approach is to listen intently to the patient's concerns, collect the data from past history, examination and medical records, arrange testing when necessary in order to reach a diagnosis. Many neurologic disorders pose chronic life-long issues. Many conditions can be treated and others require management. I will proactively partner with the patient, other physicians, family and caregivers so as to assist in modifying the impact of the disease process on the patient's life.
I believe my strengths as a physician are listening, empathy, and a strong desire to help patients. I like to teach and explain. I am careful to review complicated neurologic problems in language that will match the individual's ability to understand. I am happy to answer questions for patients.
I enjoy spending time with my wife, children and grandchildren, playing piano, listening to blues or jazz music, walking and hiking, playing tennis, kayaking, reading, walking on the beach and visiting with friends.
